You are breathing perfectly.

However you are breathing right now, there is a very good reason.

The body is a learning system and it sticks with what has provided desirable results in the past. Desirable results are defined by this learning system as survival, safety and comfort. Sounds good right? Yes and no.

Sometimes a breathing behaviour serves us really well once; like fast full breathing while jumping out of the way of a car that blew through the crosswalk in front of you on your walk to work. But what if it gets adopted as the primary state of your breathing?

Here is how it can happen:

Now, imagine unconsciously anticipating danger every time you walk through a crosswalk; your breathing changes to create arousal in your nervous system in case the car just does it again. Super smart, right?

Over time the breathing will change before you enter the crosswalk, then anytime you walk on a street. So everyday you arrive at your destination charged up as if you just averted a life-death crisis. At the extreme you may decide that the walk is too stressful and find another way to work. Or you may ride that adrenal high all morning at the office and feel completely exhausted by noon. But you have a lot to accomplish and find yourself taking a bunch of deep breaths to “get your focus back.”

This reinforces to the body that work is like jumping out of the way of a car. Yikes! And so the cycle becomes entrenched, as you breathe effortfully to keep yourself moving in the right direction. You can see how this can spiral into every area of your life and create a feeling of chronic stress.

Reinforcements for dysfunctional breathing behaviours usually operate unconsciously, that is without awareness, but can be identified through effective behavioural counselling.
